Types of Cat Food & Their Pros & Cons

Dry (Kibble)

  • Pros: Economical, convenient, long shelf life once opened, may help scrape plaque off teeth.

  • Cons: Often higher in carbohydrates, lower moisture content, can promote overeating if free‑fed.

Wet (Canned/Pouch)

  • Pros: High moisture content aids hydration; typically richer in animal protein and lower in carbs; more palatable for picky eaters.

  • Cons: More expensive per calorie; cans need refrigeration after opening; may not promote dental abrasion.

Raw & Homemade Diets

  • Pros: Can closely mimic ancestral feline diets; maximum freshness and control over ingredients; may improve coat and energy.

  • Cons: Risk of bacterial contamination (Salmonella, E. coli); requires strict balancing of vitamins/minerals (calcium, phosphorus, taurine); time‑intensive.

Freeze‑Dried & Dehydrated

  • Pros: Retain much of the raw diet’s nutrient profile; lighter weight for travel; shelf‑stable without cooking.

  • Cons: Premium pricing; still need to rehydrate before feeding; quality varies by brand.
